After two of the best trotters in North America hooked up in an epic fourth quarter match race, It’s Academic successfully defended his title by winning his second straight $250,000 Spirit of Massachusetts Trot at Plainridge Park on Sunday (July 21) afternoon.

After a three-horse tussle off the gate, Logan Park (Doug McNair) found his way to the front in a blistering :25.4. With Chapercraz (Yannick Gingras) in the pocket and Take All Comers (Todd McCarthy) sitting third, Logan Park kept the mile moving with a :54.1 half. At that station, Miller called on It’s Academic and the pair rolled out from fourth and made their way towards the leader.

It’s Academic drew alongside Logan Park at three-quarters and it was on from there between the 2023 older trotters of the year from the U.S. and Canada. Logan Park and It’s Academic matched strides around the final bend and into the stretch, but neither had gotten a clear advantage. However, as they moved into deep stretch, It’s Academic swelled up and trotted away from Logan Park while keeping stablemate Chapercraz at bay to win by a length in 1:51.2.

It’s Academic joins Manchego as the only two-time and back-to-back winners of the Spirit of Massachusetts Trot.

It was the first win in only two 2024 starts for It’s Academic ($8.00) who has now gone over $2.4 million in lifetime earnings. The 7-year-old son of Uncle Peter-Annapolis is owned by Bradley Grant and trained by Ron Burke.

It’s Academic was the second win of the day for Miller.

  • After being parked out the entire mile, It's Academic ran down his competition late to win the $250,000 Spirit of Massachusetts Trot at Plainridge Park on Sunday afternoon (July 23).

Balenciaga (Mark Macdonald) shot right to the front and led to the quarter in :27.1. But Rattle My Cage (Ake Svanstedt) was moving on the outside and crossed over to the lead as the race passed the stands. With a new leader in place, Asteroid (Dexter Dunn) and It's Academic (David Miller), who had been trotting on the outside since the start, were working their way to the front. At three-quarters, Asteroid took the lead from Rattle My Cage, leaving It's Academic still in the breeze. Asteroid and It's Academic trotted together around the far turn and into the stretch, where the pocket-sitting Rattle My Cage joined the fray heading for home. From the pylons out, Rattle My Cage, Asteroid and It's Academic were in a tight pack and the race was anyone's to win. But It's Academic continued to grind and got the lead just before the line to win by a neck in 1:51.4.

The millionaire It's Academic ($4.80), who finished second in the 2022 Spirit Trot, now adds this stake to his impressive list of victories and pushed his career earnings to $1,645,406 as a result for owner Bradley Grant. Ron Burke trains It's Academic.

It was the first Spirit of Massachusetts Trot win for both Miller and Burke.

  • Millionaire Alrajah One IT followed up his impressive Crawford Farms victory at The Meadowlands with an equally impressive victory in the $250,000 Spirit of Massachusetts Trot, winning in 1:50.3 to set a new track record for older trotting horses as well as a new lifetime mark Monday (July 25) at Plainridge Park.

Alrajah One IT (Dexter Dunn) got away sixth while It’s Academic (Yannick Gingras) took the field to the quarter in :26.1. But that lead would be short lived as Forbidden Trade (Mark Macdonald) was rolling up the outside to gain the lead by the half in :54.2. Heading around turn two, Lovedbythemasses (Tim Tetrick) pulled from fourth and was flying outside with Alrajah One IT on his back.

Lovedbythemasses cleared at three-quarters and Alrajah One IT stayed outside putting the pressure on the leader all around the last turn. When they straightened for home, Alrahah One IT swelled up and trotted away to a 1-3/4 length victory in 1:50.3.

“Post nine is never easy, but he makes it easy. He followed his cover through the turn and when he got clear he kind of cruised home,” said Dunn. “He does all the hard work and makes my job easy.”

It was the third consecutive Spirit of Massachusetts Trot driving victory for Dunn who won the last two with Manchego. Alrajah One IT’s win time replaced the 1:51.3 track record that Guardian Angel AS set in the 2019 Spirit of Massachusetts.

Alrahah One IT remains undefeated in North America after his second straight win and it pushed his lifetime earnings to $1,376,807 for owner Scuderia My Horse. Ake Svanstedt trains the 6-year-old record setter.

  • The Spirit trot saw the return of Manchego, who set a world record time of 1:49.3 at Plainridge Park last year in the same event. The Nancy Takter-trained champion trotting mare won the stake again on Sunday, but not without a serious challenge from Lindy The Great.

Dexter Dunn floated Manchego off the gate and battled Lindy The Great (Andy Miller) for the lead, gaining control in a solid :26.4 quarter. The six horse field continued in single file around the clubhouse turn and up the backstretch where Forbidden Trade (Daniel Dube) pulled from third and tried to mount a challenge. But Manchego was trotting hard and opened up a two length lead at the top of the stretch. It was there that Miller tipped Lindy The Great and he came full of trot and conviction. Lindy The Great was in full flight and gaining with every stride while Dunn kept Manchego on task. The gap was closing in deep stretch but as they hit the line, Manchego finished what she started and won by ½ length ahead of Lindy The Great in 1:50.

“It took a while to get to the front but I didn’t push her too hard. But once she got there she went about her business and raced real well,” said driver Dunn. “It’s a pleasure to come here to Plainridge Park and see all the fans at the track. And the track put on a great show.”

Manchego now has five wins in her six starts this year and has bankrolled $292,971 for owner Black Horse Racing.

  • Manchego put on a display of devastating speed in a gate to wire victory in the $250,000 Spirit of Massachusetts Trot at Plainridge Park on Sunday (July 26) and set a new world record for aged trotting mares over a 5/8th’s mile track when she tripped the timer in 1:49.3.

Manchego broke her own world record of 1:50.1 set at Hollywood Dayton Raceway in 2019. The time also smashed the all-age track trotting record at Plainridge Park, besting the 1:51.2 set by JL Cruze in the 2017 Spirit Trot.

Dexter Dunn had Manchego revved up off the gate and shot right for the lead with Atlanta (Yannick Gingras) dropping in the pocket from post seven as the race passed the quarter in a blistering :25.2. The field remained in single file as Manchego marched to the half in :53.3 and the three-quarters in 1:21 with Atlanta in deliberate pursuit.

As the pair trotted away from the field around the last turn, Gingras pulled Atlanta off the pylons to take her best shot at the leader. But as soon as she pulled, Manchego accelerated, opened up two lengths and proceeded to the wire under no urging at all to win wrapped-up by 2-1/2 lengths.

Atlanta held on for second and Run Director (David Miller) closed fast to finish third.

It was the 31st career win for Manchego ($3) and it pushed her lifetime earnings to $2,342,705. The 5-year-old daughter of Muscle Hill-Secret Magic is owned by Black Horse Racing and is trained by Nancy Takter.

  • Guardian Angel As lived up to his billing in the $250,000 Spirit of Massachusetts Trot as he led every step of the way en route to an impressive victory, setting a new track record in the process.

Tim Tetrick wasted no time putting Guardian Angel As on the point, seating everyone else in the process before he hit the quarter in :26.4. Tetrick then slowed down the pace in the second panel to :28.3, forcing an outer flow that brought Weslynn Dancer (David Miller), La Grange A (Andy Miller) and Mambo Lindy (Drew Monti).

The field made its way up the backside and Weslynn Dancer eventually drew even with Guardian Angel As before they hit three-quarters in 1:22.4. There Tetrick tapped his horse twice and he shifted gears and opened up by a length. Down the lane Tetrick reminded Guardian Angel As his work wasn’t quite finished and he tapped the wheel disk a couple times more and the trotter closed it out on his own, winning by a length in 1:51.3.

The time was a new track record for aged trotting horses, smashing the standing mark of 1:53.4 set by Kodak Lindy in 2016 and was only one-fifth of a second off the all-time trotting mark of 1:51.2 set by JL Cruze in the inaugural edition of the Spirit of Massachusetts Trot back in 2017.

Guardian Angel As ($3.00) has now won five out of his last six races and the winner’s share of the purse boosted his 2019 earnings to $312,934 for owners Acl Stuteri Ab and Kjell Johansson. Anette Lorentzon trains Guardian Angel As.

Clara Barton

  • The secondary featured $100,000 Clara Barton distaff pace was won by the heavily backed Sylvia Hanover (Tim Tetrick) after she made a strong statement rolling past the quarter.

Always B Naughty (Yannick Gingras) grabbed the early lead while Beach Cowgirl (Dave Miller) pushed the issue from the outside as they tripped the quarter in :26.3. But almost immediately after they passed that station, Tetrick had Sylvia Hanover out and pacing three-wide from third and the mare took the lead in front of the grandstand.

As they moved out of turn two and onto the backstretch, Talk Curdy To Me (Todd McCarthy) quickly moved into second while Grace Hill followed and dropped in third as they hit three-quarters in 1:21.1. Sylvia Hanover maintained a two length lead around that final bend, dug in for the home stretch and turned back all comers as she hit the wire on top by 1-3/4 lengths in 1:48.2, just one-fifth of a second off both her lifetime mark and the stake record.

The win with Sylvia Hanover gave Tetrick his fifth Clara Barton victory in five Clara Barton starts. Tetrick has won twice with both Shartin N and Lyons Sentinel.

Sylvia Hanover ($2.40) has now earned in excess of $1.6 million lifetime on the strength of her 19 wins. The 4-year-old daughter of Always B Miki-Shyaway is owned by Hudson Standardbred Stable and trained by Mark Steacy.

  • Mikala strikes again in the Clara Barton Pace

After coming off an ultra-impressive 1:47.4 victory in the $159,000 Dorothy Houghton Memorial at the Meadowlands last Saturday (July 15), there was no letdown whatsoever for Mikala, who scored her second win in eight days in the $100,000 Clara Barton Distaff Pace.

Max Contract (Andy Miller) took the early lead but George Brennan was out and rolling with Mikala and had full control of the race as they passed the quarter in :26.3. Positions remained unchanged until the half where Drama Act (Dave Miller) came first-up from fourth to challenge. Drama Act continued to apply outside pressure on Mikala, who was pacing comfortably and well within herself as they got to three-quarters in 1:22. As the mares spiraled through the final turn, Mikala looked strong, but Max Contract was ready to make her move. Andy Miller asked for more from Max Contract and the mare dug in. But Mikala was not to be denied this day as she turned back the challenge and paced home ahead by three-quarters of a length in 1:49.

The twelfth lifetime win for Mikala ($2.80) inflated her career earnings to $441,128 for owners Joseph Davino, Brad Shackman, Anthony Perretti Farm and the Drennan Stable. Nik Drennan is the winning trainer.

  • The co-featured $100,000 Clara Barton saw three streaks continue. Lyons Sentinel defended her title in this stake and trainer Jim King Jr. and driver Tim Tetrick won their fourth consecutive Clara Barton Pace, having won it twice with Shartin N before their two wins with Lyons Sentinel. King and Tetrick are the only trainer and driver to win this stake since its inception.

Racine Bell (Mark Macdonald) flew off the wings and got to the quarter on time in :26 flat. Blue Diamond Eyes (Gingras) and Lyons Sentinel (Tetrick) followed in line to the half in :55.1 where the next move came. Tetrick pulled Lyons Sentinel and drew alongside Racine Bell as they rolled up the backside and the two were in a battle from there.

After hitting three-quarters in 1:22, Racine Bell and Lyons Sentinel matching strides around the last turn and were even at the head of the stretch. But as they proceeded down the lane, Lyons Sentinel began to edge away and eventually opened up a 2-1/4 length advantage at the wire and won in 1:50.2.

“My mare raced well today. I knew when I pulled if I could look Racine Bell in the eye, I could beat her,” said Tetrick. “I love coming up here and hope Jimmy (King) can find another one to race in here for next year.”

The two-time millionaire Lyons Sentinel ($3.40) added to her riches with her third win of the year and 25th lifetime for owners Threelyonsracing.

  • Lyons Sentinel matches Shartin N's all-time Plainridge track record with 1:48.1 victory

With the now retired champion Shartin N having won the first two editions of the $100,000 Clara Barton Distaff Pace, the team of trainer Jim King Jr. and driver Tim Tetrick returned with a new star and remained undefeated in that stake after Lyons Sentinel brushed to an impressive 1:48.1 victory, tying Shartin N’s all-time track pacing record set in the Barton last year.

Scott Zeron fired Rocknificent off the truck and flew to the quarter in :25.3. Almost immediately at that station, JK First Lady (Dexter Dunn) pulled from second, took the lead and continued to the half in very fast :53.2 with Lyons Sentinel tracking from third. The pace continued to be stiff with a :26.4 quarter up the backstretch, hitting the three-quarters in 1:20.1. That’s where Lyons Sentinel pulled from third and just took off. She motored alongside JK First Lady at the top of the turn and pulled away by two lengths heading into the stretch. She was in full flight down the lane where she opened up 2-¼ lengths over Rocknificent and won in 1:48.1.

Her driver Tim Tetrick was all smiles after the race and was very complimentary of his winner.

"My mare was super today. She was on her toes and just dragged me around the track there and just went on her own."

Lyons Sentinel is owned by the Threelyons Racing.

  • $100,000 Clara Barton Distaff Pace, Shartin N made herself right at home again at Plainridge as she broke the all-age track record that she set here just last year.

Tim Tetrick put Shartin N on the point immediately as Kissin In The Sand (Yannick Gingras) left from post four and followed closely with the two-hole trip. After the quick :26.2 quarter and with no pressure at all, Tetrick backed down the second panel to :28.1 and the race seemed well in control for him at that point.

By the five-eighths, Gingras pulled Kissin In The Sand and tried to draw alongside Shartin N, but never got closer than a length around the far turn. Tetrick eased the lines a bit and gave Shartin N her head and the mare swelled up down the lane, opening up 2-1/4 lengths in a :27 flat last panel and won in 1:48.1.

Stablemate Soho Burning Love A (Jordan Stratton) rallied late to finish second and 38-1 shot Philly Hanover (Dexter Dunn) completed the board.

The time was a new all-age track record at Plainridge Park, which was set last year in this same stake by Shartin N when she cruised home in 1:49.1, and it was only one-fifth of a second off the world record of 1:48 for an aged pacing mare over a five-eighths mile track that is co-held by her and Somwherovrarainbow.

This was the 44th career victory for Shartin N ($2.60) who has now earned $2,244,946 for owners Richard Poillucci, Jo Ann Looney-King and Tim Tetrick. The 7-year-old daughter of Tintin In America-Bagdarin is trained by Jim King Jr.
